All asleep. Tsavo river. ISHWAR is lying asleep. He is delirious.
ISHWAR suddenly shrieks
Searching, searching, searching for Fateh ! Vira, I am your Ranjha, come across the Chenab [river Chenab] to snatch you from the Khelda [husband of her] – No ! No ! I didn’t’ touch her !
FATEH
Shhh… Ishwar… Shhh…
ISHWAR
Fateh – Fateh – ki horeya ? [What’s happening]
FATEH
You’ve got fever yaar – your head is hotter then miTi [dirt] in the Taru desert. Mosquitoes, Ishwar, you’ve got malaria. The sahb-doctor’s medicine will take time, just try and asleep.
ISHWAR
Lions…
FATEH
One thing at a time, Ishwar. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Patterson-sahb is out in the jungle – he’s been sitting in the tree shading our camp all night. He’ll shoot any lion if it gets close.
ISHWAR
Kill me, Fateh – kill me before the lions eat me !
FATEH
Nothing is going to happen to you ! Hush, hush…
ISHWAR
Hot – so hot – I’m shivering with cold…
FATEH
It will pass soon…
ISHWAR
Where we were working, by the river, did you see the ant-hill ? Millions of ants coming and going from the pillars. Grains – they looked like the grains I would give Vira… Isn’t her chukki red also ?
FATEH
I don’t know – maybe…
ISHWAR
It is. Vira is the Queen inside, maharani of all the grains around, which she grinds and grinds to make rotis…
FATEH lays down to sleep beside ISHWAR.
A lion appears.
LION
A desert you fled –
FATEH
An ocean I crossed –
LION
To lie here in the savannah-grass of my home.
FATEH
I am not welcome ?
LION
Does it matter ? The steel tracks will lie on my chest, the tribes will become strangers in their own homes…
FATEH
What will you do ?
LION
What I must. Are you ready to stand alone, gazing on a herd of animals, patiently waiting to pick your prey ?
FATEH
What is my fate ?
LION
When you can stand alone, then will be born Kala Singha – the Black Lion !
The lion tears into a sleeping body lying near FATEH. Screams, gunshots. From the chaos, a frustrated PATTERSON appears.
PATTERSON
Damn ! He was in my sights, I could practically see his head a trophy at my feet – and the platform collapses ! I said the platform had to be secured to the branches !
FATEH
It was tested this morning, sahb…
PATTERSON
Did he get anyone ?
FATEH
Malang, son of Sher Singh of district…
PATTERSON
What number ?
FATEH
Forty-four, sahb.
PATTERSON
That makes 29 coolies that bloody lion’s killed –
FATEH
And many more Africans, sahb.
PATTERSON
No doubt…
FATEH
Maybe, sahb, he is a messenger from the gods, come to warn us –
PATTERSON
Warn ? It’s a beast – a beast, not one of your gods ! This, to state the obvious, is not India. Here a simpler law operates – set the right trap for your prey.
FATEH
We should return to Mombasa, sahb –
PATTERSON
This is a man-eater – do you have any conception what that means ? It’s pitting its wits against me ! Kill or be killed, that’s the food here in Africa. No, this beast’s got the smell of man in his nose and he’ll only stop when he’s filled his new-found pleasure… Perhaps I’ll satisfy that urge…
FATEH
Sahb… ?
PATTERSON looks around. His gaze falls on ISHWAR.
PATTERSON to Fateh
One of the bogies. Erect a cage at one end of the bogie, just wide enough for the bait. Leave the other end open, with a ramp leading into the cabin.
FATEH
What will you use as bait, sahb ?
PATTERSON indicating Ishwar
Him.
FATEH
Sahb ! He’s sick, sahb – malaria – fever –
PATTERSON
Precisely. He’ll give off the scent we need to lure the lion.
FATEH
I’ll go, sahb –
PATTERSON
You get the men together and set the bogie up. We’re here to tame this jungle and I damn well will do it !
The cage in the bogie is erected. ISHWAR is borne prone into the cage.
ISHWAR
Where – where am I going, Fateh-ya ?
FATEH
You’ll be safe – Patterson-sahb is close by with his gun.
ISHWAR
The lion –
FATEH
You will be safe.
ISHWAR
What happened last night ?
FATEH
Nothing. You were having bad dreams.
ISHWAR
Will you stay with me ?
FATEH
Rest. Go to sleep.
ISHWAR
Panga ! Where’s my panga ?
FATEH
You don’t need a panga now, Ishwar – there’s no cutting to do. You just rest.
ISHWAR
Panga ! Give me my panga !
FATEH place Ishwar’s panga beside him.
ISHWAR
In my hand.
FATEH complies. Seeing him slip into sleep again, FATEH retires. Sounds of the Tsavo river flowing nearby.
ISHWAR
I can’t see your face, Vira – let me see the face which mile after mile grows fainter along this railway line…
The lion appears, creeping up to the bars behind which ISHWAR is lying.
ISHWAR
Your hot breath burns like fire The earth beneath is burning my path Your hair blows about circles of dust Lightning flashes in deep darkness But your face cracks into a thousand pieces, Each piece a different glow.
ISHWAR violently thrusts forward the army in which he is holding the panga.
ISHWAR
Fateh !
The panga cuts through the lion’s neck. It falls to the ground. FATEH rushes to him. Startled at first, he starts laughing.
FATEH
You’ve done it, you’ve done it ! Oi, Ishwar-a, you’re a hero ! You’ve done it ! Ishwar Veer, that’s what we’ll call you, Brave Ishwar ! Patterson-sahb, Ptterson-sahb !
PATTERSON enters.
FATEH
Sahb – my friend has killed the lion !
PATTERSON to Fateh
Take him back to the infirmary and get cracking on the railway bridge across Tsavo. What mile is this ?
FATEH
131, sahb. – Ishwar Lal killed the lion, sahb, number six seventy-five, sahb – my friend from –
PATTERSON
We’ve only come a third of the way so far – and that beast’s held up work for 3 weeks. Make up for lost time !
PATTERSON leaves.
ALLAUDDIN
Huh ! All this time, he was walking round with his gun, but when our Ishwar kills the lion, he is more worried about the time ! Gora kuta [white dog] !
CHORUS
Time, time, time ! … / No time to bury the dead, / no time to look after the sick, / no time to eat, / no time to sleep, / the line goes on. Survey the line ! / Clear the jungle ! / Build the embankment ! / Place the sleepers ! / Fix the chairs ! / Lay the rails ! /
Tous dorment. La rivière Tsavo. ISHVAR est étendu endormi. Il délire.
ISHWAR (se met soudain à hurler)
Retrouver, retrouver, retrouver Fateh !
ISHWAR
Les lions…
FATEH
Une chose à la fois, Ishwar. Tu n’as pas à avoir peur.
LION
Un désert tu as fui –
FATEH
Un océan j’ai traversé –
LION
ISHWAR
Le lion –
FATEH
Tu seras en sécurité.
ISHWAR
Que s’est-il passé la nuit dernière ?
FATEH
Rien. Tu as fait de mauvais rêves.
ISHWAR
Tu resteras avec moi ?
FATEH
Repose-toi. Dors.
ISHWAR
Panga ! Où est ma panga ?
FATEH
FATEH
Tu as réussi, tu as réussi ! Oï, Ishwar-a, tu es un héros ! Tu as réussi !
