What shall we build, my brothers ?
Temples and shrines and sacrificial slabs
whereon we will make our offerings
long rejected ? On this body
marked by scars of long
known joys, let us build
another body in our own image.
as the whiplash sounds in the distance,
and army boots tramp on heavy pavements,
brother, another one has fallen,
another one, a stranger now
among all men my brothers.
Qu’allons-nous bâtir, mes frères ?
Temples et sanctuaires et autels sacrificiels
sur lesquels disposer nos offrandes
longtemps rejetées ? Sur ce corps
marqué des cicatrices du temps
des joies passées, allons bâtir
un autre corps à l’image de nous.
Alors que claquent les fouets au lointain,
et sur les pavés lourds les bottes des armées,
frère, un autre que nous est tombé,
un autre que nous, maintenant étranger
parmi tous les hommes mes frères.
